By the end of the summer I have gotten lazy. All I want to eat is tomatoes on fried toast, or plum torte, or corn pasta, or a burger at Rippers.1 All I want to do is find a vacation kitchen where I can cook for my friends. All I want to do is sit outside and have a little drink and think about how the sun is still out late, how it won’t be for long.
All of that to say that I haven’t been cooking too many interesting things lately, or having many interesting cooking thoughts. I’ve been working on my book and working on work and going to the beach. I’ve been eating a lot of tuna bowls and salmon bowls and crispy salmon bowls and big CSA salads. I don’t think August is a time for great newsletter ideas, and I don’t want to phone it in over here, so Mess Hall is going on a brief late-summer hiatus.
I’ll be back after Labor Day, with renewed vim and vigor and ideas and actually tested recipes and a stack of fall cookbooks I’m excited to dig into. Until then, I’ll be pausing payments.
As a little TTFN gift I’ve unlocked the wedge salad sandwich recipe from last summer, which I’m dying to make again. No paid subscription needed! You should also read my Eater feature on EGG YOLKS and how they have become a fetish object! Yes I wrote 5,000 words on egg yolks! Read them HERE!
Ok I’ll see you soon :)

ACTUALLY I’ve been meaning to tell the masses that my new favorite Rockaway beach lunch—aside from the burger at the Meat Up Grill—is the fried fish sandwich at Red Hook Lobster Pound at the Beach 97 food court. Yes, it’s like $17, but it’s really really good, crispy and just greasy enough and soft and slaw-y.
Happy hiatus! Also: those tuna mayo bowls, right?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Benton Bacon? I'm in California --sell it here? The bacon does need to be right!!
